Overview

The University of Alberta Conference Center offers year-round meeting facilities with dormitory accommodation and classroom and lecture theaters being available throughout the summer months. The center opened in the fall of 2003. Additional summer accommodation in new residence rooms with private washrooms will be available for AFF's June conference.

You can access a virtual tour of the campus, food services, and conference housing at the conference services Web site.

Accommodations

Accommodations and meals at the University of Alberta are much less expensive than in hotels.  The University of Alberta Conference Centre at Lister Centre has three types of rooms. All prices include tax and are in Canadian dollars (exchange rates will vary-– those given here are for September 29, 2003):

(1) traditional dormitory rooms (shared bath with linen and towel services - linens are replaced every Thursday, towels every second day of your stay) - twin rooms at $44.80 (appx. $33.00 U.S.) per room per night; single rooms at $33.60 (appx. $25.00 U.S.) per room per night.

(2) Private single-occupancy dorm rooms (private bath; linen and towel services) at $50.40 (appx. $37.00 U.S.) per room per night.

(3) a limited number of guest rooms (Queen or double occupancy) at $77.28 (appx. $57.00 U.S.) per room per night. Guest rooms will be rented on a first-come-first-serve basis; we request that only couples request guest rooms because they are limited in number.

You are responsible for making your own room reservations with the University.  Call Guest Services at 780-492-4281 (September through April from 8:30am to 4:30pm // May through August 24 hours). Please reserve ASAP in order to make sure that you get a room. The University of Alberta requires a credit card number to guarantee your room and 48 hours notice of cancellation.  You may also obtain room reservation forms here:

Hotel Options

If you do not wish to stay in a university sleeping room (of which there are 3 types - see Facility), you may stay at a nearby hotel.  The University Conference Center has given us the following information about hotels in Edmonton:

Two hotels, the Met and the Varscona, are each about a 20 minute walk from campus.  There are many hotels in Edmonton that access the university via subway.  Information can be found at the Edmonton Tourism Website.

Parking

There is a parking lot located outside of Lister Centre for guests staying in the residence and/or using meeting facilities.  Overnight guests are to purchase their permits from Guest Services (at Lister Centre) at a cost of $4 per day (Canadian).  Please park in the lot located outside of Lister Centre (Zone M) and proceed to Guest Services to check-in and obtain your permit.  Guest Services staff will direct you to the overnight lot.

Meeting Rooms

Conference registration, bookstore, and meeting rooms will all be located at the University of Alberta Conference Centre at Lister Centre (87 Avenue and 116 Street). Go there first to get your registration packet, which will tell you the location of all sessions.  A campus map can be found on the conference services Web site. (sort by building name; Lister Centre is H2 on the map).

Mountain Touring

The American Automobile Association guide for Alberta lists 15 facilities for Jasper National Park and 26 facilities for Banff National Park.  Rates vary considerably.  June is peak season, so if you plan to take a pre- or post-conference trip to the mountains, reserve well in advance.  If you are coming to the conference alone and would like to join up with others on a mountain tour, let us know and we will try to connect you.  The Parks Canada Web site will give you camping and other information.

Travel to Canada

Information on travel to Canada can be found at:

 http://travel.state.gov/tips_canada.html

Here is some information from that site:

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S.

You will, however, need:

(1) proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.

(2) photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.

Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a “Green Card.”

If you are a dual U.S./Canadian citizen you should always present yourself as a Canadian citizen when entering Canada. However, U.S. citizens should use their U.S. passports when entering or leaving the United States.

Due to international concern over child abduction, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children often need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of citizenship as explained above.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry.

For further information, including information on student or business travel, visitors can contact the Embassy of Canada at 501 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20001, (202) 682-1740, see their Internet home page at http://www.cic.gc.ca or contact the nearest Canadian consulate. (A list of Canadian consulates is at the end of this brochure.)
